My son was ran over by a drunk driver in 2006. My son was air lifed to a local hospital were he underwent two emergency brain surgeries, facial reconstruction, repair of a broken nose, broken eye socket, broken hand, and a titanium plate had to be placed in his skull. He laid in a coma for a week, and the ICU bill along with the rest of the bills, such as surgeons, xrays, cat scans, etc. After leaving the hospital he had to have new teeth put in his mouth, and physical therapy and speach therapy. This led to just over $150,000 worth of debt. I'm happy to say that my son has recovered very well, except for the occasional seizure and/or headache. We have never been victims of such a violent crime, and assumed the medical bills would be the responsibility of the person who harmed my son...wrong! We were left with all of the medical bills, except for the $20,000 victims assistance gave to the hospital, and the small portion our car insurance carieer covered. We are now faced with bad credit, and judgments, and just today found out my husbands check will be garnished. Where is justice for families of crimes. If anyone has any advice for me, I'd love too hear it. The photo below was taken moments after my son woke from being in a coma.
